It is 5 am and a biting cold wind sweeps through Kumbarhalla, a remote village located 10 km from Jamakhandi, India’s Mecca of cycling. The sun is still a long way from topping the horizon, but 24-year-old Mahadev Kurani alias Madappa, a national-level cyclist, silently slips out of his dingy house with his Singapore-made Trek bicycle.

Mahadev Kurani mortgaged his family’s acre of land for Rs 60,000 to fund a bike from Singapore. With interest piling, he was forced to take up the Rs 4,800 per month job
